Leventis announces bid for re-election
SUMTER, S.C., March 3, 2008 -- Retired Air Force
General and state Senator Phil Leventis today announced his bid
for re-election for the SC Senate. Leventis, a Sumter businessman,
said his priorities for his next term are protecting South Carolina's
natural resources, supporting public schools, and fighting for
greater access to affordable health care. He also indicated that
he is most proud of his community involvement and constituent
service which he pledges to continue.
Senator Leventis issued the following statement:
"This area of South Carolina is home and I've always believed
in fighting for your home. I'm proud of what we have accomplished
for our communities and constituents. From making our schools
more efficient to saving Shaw Air Force Base, we are continuing
to make the progress our citizens demand and deserve."
"There is still much to be done. Too many of our citizens
lack access to affordable health care and are often one health
crisis away from financial ruin. These are hard-working South
Carolinians who play by the rules, but are too often faced with
tough choices like making the mortgage payment or going to the
doctor. As a Senator, I must work with other members to find solutions
and close this growing insurance gap. It's time for us to step
up and raise the cigarette tax for health care in South Carolina."
"The path to economic prosperity runs through the school
house. With the upcoming consolidation of Sumter county schools,
we have taken critical steps to making our children's schools
more efficient and most significantly, more effective. And we
are seeking to make higher education more accessible to the people
of Sumter and Lee counties by expanding USC Sumter and enhancing
the nursing school at Central Carolina Tech. Supporting higher
educational opportunities and school district consolidation are
just some of the progress we have made together.
"The success of current and future generations of students
must be a priority for South Carolina's leaders. We need to end
the shameful standard of only being required to provide a 'minimally
adequate' education that has been limiting students' potential
for too long."
"Protecting our quality of life begins by protecting South
Carolina's environment. Our natural resources are irreplaceable.
I will continue to fight to ensure South Carolina is not the nation's
dumping ground for hazardous, nuclear, biological or municipal
waste. I will continue to work to help existing business and industry
meet their waste management needs sensibly, economically but always
responsibly to protect our state's future."
"I'm inviting everyone to join me in this effort. We must
work together like we have done in the past, but this time we
must work together for the future."
