Phil Leventis and his family have been involved in community activities
and public service for years.
"Public
service is our family's way of standing up for our community,"
Leventis says.
His civic
service started at an early age. While a student at A.C. Flora
High School in Columbia, Leventis he was active in the American
Legion Boys' State program. He represented South Carolina at Boys'
Nation in 1963. He also served on the staff of Boys' State for
several years. He was a member of the Key Club during those years
and served as Treasurer of the North and South Carolina District
of Key Club. During his senior year, he served as president of
his 1964 high school class at A.C. Flora High School in Columbia.
Later while enrolled in the School of Engineering at the University
of Virginia, Leventis was active in student government.
Civic
activities around Sumter
Leventis
has been a member of the Sumter Rotary Club for almost 30 years.
A past member of the club's board, Leventis also has been named
a Paul Harris Fellow, one of Rotary's top national recognitions.
Leventis also chaired the Walk America Walk-a-thon in Sumter on
more than one occasion.
In the late 1970s, Leventis was appointed to serve on the Sumter
County Airport Commission. He also served as president of the
Manning Avenue Free Studio in South Sumter. He also has served
as vice president of the Sumter Chamber of Commerce. Additionally,
he has served several terms as a member of the Board of the South
Carolina Beer Association, a trade organization.
A state
senator
In 1980,
Leventis first offered for public office. He ran successfully
for State Senate, then representing Sumter and Clarendon Counties.
He has served continuously since 1980 and is presently representing
parts of Sumter and Lee Counties in his twenty-fourth year in
the General Assembly. He is fifth in seniority among the state's
46 senators.
A former
chairman of the Senate Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee,
Leventis remains a senior member of the committee, which addresses
statewide farming and environmental issues. Leventis also serves
on the Senate Finance Committee, Senate Transportation Committee,
Senate Ethics Committee, and Senate Labor, Commerce and Industry
Committee.
"Serving
in the Senate is not about getting your way," Leventis says.
"It's about getting something good for the people we serve,
all South Carolinians."
Other
service
In addition to having run a business for over three decades and
serving in the South Carolina Senate, Leventis currently serves
as a member of the Sumter County Development Board. He and his
wife, E.V., continue their years of service in church work at
the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter in Sumter.
